Renowned as the greatest purveyors of rootsy soul and funk for some years, Sharon Jones' band - The Dap Kings have more recently found fame as the band who supplied the required authentic retro soul vibe for Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black' album as well as the basis for much of super DJ/producers Mark Ronsons' recent projects. For some the band would have previously unknown – but the whole story goes back much further:
Sharon Jones was born in the very funky, soulful city of Augusta, Georgia in 1956. As a teenager in the early nineteen seventies, she began singing outside of the church in talent shows and with local funk groups. Later she would make her living with a combination of sporadic session work as a mostly anonymous voice on various dance records (sometimes credited as Lafaye Jones), singing with wedding bands, and a handful of day jobs which included stints as both a prison guard at New York's notorious Riker's Island, and an armored car guard for Wells Fargo Bank. In 1996 she was called in to sing back-up at a Desco Records studio session for 70's soul legend Lee Fields and a beautiful musical magic began to happen.
By 2009 Daptone Records had become the premier record label for feisty soul, funk afro beat and jazz releases in the world today. At the top of the Daptone artists roster sits the undeniable Queen of 21st century soul Sharon Jones- taking her band, her music into the realms of MTV features, live and rocking David Letterman appearances and consistantly sold out gigs around the entire world from London to Tokyo - the bands live show is now a thing of legend - rivalling James Brown at the top of his game in the 70's for exciting, gritty and soulful performances.
Their most recent album 100 Days, 100 Nights, is arguably their greatest achievement to date. With much more extensive songwriting and arranging contributions from the members of the band, the songs take more distinct and well-crafted forms, enabling a deeper more soulful return to traditional Rhythm and Blues roots. However, it is the raw fire and Soul which Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings consistently pour into their music that will make this record an irreplaceable part of many people's lives.
Quite simply - in an age of soul-light, retro styled pop music - Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings are the genuine article..often imitated - but never bettered. |
